Traffic forecasting
developments in
Traffic & transport
Investment and policy decisions are made for the long term. Ensuring that such decisions fit future aviation demand requires an understanding of how traffic and transport will evolve.
Beelining produces traffic and transport forecasts for airports, airlines and governments to inform investment and policy decisions.
‘How will air traffic develop over time and what investments and policy decisions are needed to accommodate demand?’
building a forecast
Methodology
Beelining builds traffic forecasts using a bottom-up approach. Future demand for air travel is estimated at route level based on characteristics of the origin and destination, possible capacity constraints and trends regarding costs and passenger preferences.
Next, the demand is translated into aircraft movements taking into account fleet developments. Finally, this results in a future network with corresponding traffic and transport volumes.
for airports, airlines and governments
Applications
Beelining produces traffic forecasts for airports, airlines and governments to support:
Investment
Airports and airlines invest in equipment and infrastructure to serve future demand. Overinvestment creates unnecessary costs, while underinvestment leads to missed revenues. It is therefore important to align investments with future demand. For this, reliable traffic and transport forecasts are indispensable.
Policy
Governments make policies for aviation. Such policies can only be successful when based on realistic assumptions on the development of air traffic. For the assessment of policy options – for example in a social cost-benefit analysis (SCBA) – a good forecast is indispensable.
