Economic impact

aviation's contribution to

Employment & GDP

An economic impact study reveals how much employment and added value (GDP) an airport or airline contributes to the regional economy.

Typically, a distinction is made between direct, indirect, induced and catalytic contribution. Beelining collaborated on several economic impact studies for airports in Europe and the Middle East.

Direct

Employment and added value at companies in the aviation sector.

Indirect

Employment and added value at suppliers to the aviation sector.

Induced

Employment and value added through spending by employees in the aviation sector and at suppliers.

Catalytic

Employment and added value in businesses through the connectivity facilitated by an airport.

assessing economic impacts

Methodology

The direct economic impact is based on employment and production data of airports in the aviation sector. The indirect and induced impacts are derived from the direct impact through an input-output analysis. The catalytic contribution is more difficult to determine. Companies locate in a particular region for various reasons; the presence of an airport is often one of many location factors.

It would therefore be incorrect to attribute all employment and value added of such companies to an airport. Instead, an econometric model can be used to estimate the total causal impact of an airport on the regional economy. Subtracting the direct, indirect and induced impacts from the total impact results in the catalytic impact.

for airports, airlines and governments

Applications

Economic impact studies are used by airports, airlines and governments for the following purposes:

Monitoring & forecasting

Airports and airlines use economic impact studies to assess their current and future contribution to the regional economy – in terms of employment and added value.

Scenario studies

Governments use economic impact studies to estimate the impacts of policy measures – such as airport expansion or the introduction of an air passenger tax – on the local economy.

experience with different

Types of impact studies

Beelining has extensive experience with different types of impact studies, including economic and environmental impact studies, Social Cost-Benefit Analyses (SCBAs) and cost-effectiveness studies. Which type of study is most appropriate depends on the research question.

Economic impact

How much employment and value added (GDP) are supported by an airport, airline or route?

Environmental

How much emissions does the operation of an airport or airline cause and how can they be reduced?

SCBA

Do the positive impacts of an investment or policy measure outweigh the negative impacts on society?

Cost-effectiveness

Which investment or policy measure achieves a given emission or noise target at the lowest possible cost?
